The Importance of Support in a Scientific Experiment

In context, there was only two possible theories to begin with. A refutation of one of the two logically implies support in this context for the other logical. So it can only point in one direction because they've designed the question that way. But a scientist should bring an attitude of wanting to falsify their theories rather than verify them.
