The Class Issue in the War on Drugs
There is a class issue here, isn't there? It's class and it's race. The war on drugs has always been on both of those standards. Things work as a kind of totem to bring together all the fears and anxieties that people have towards a particular group. Poor people are caught up in drug lords for sorts of reasons that are typically practical as well as ideological. All they can do is distract us from it and get people to pay attention to fripperies. So we're talking about stuff like this or sticking migrants on boats because they don't want to talk about inflation.
