He knew he needed to do something to make people believe in the united states of america as opposed to their town or state. So he set out on a series of road trips, going from the temporary capital of new york to new england. People would often get out of his carriage, dressed in his general's uniform and ride down a main street to great a claim. And this had a truly galvanizing at on the people.
