The effects of nitrous oxide are very euphoric and borderline hallucinogenic. The Oracle of Dalfi would go up in her chair and huff all of this nitrous oxide flying out of a crack in the earth to have visions or give prophecy. Merlin was not just from the Arthurian legends, there is evidence that he was an actual person. He did not have like sorcery like magical powers but was probably a Celtic shaman as well.
