When we think about the bottom of a glacier, should we think about a smooth, glassy, marble surface? Or is it very like lumpy, bumpy, like a kind of an inverse of the grand canyon? It's all of the above. If you imagine dumping rilometers of ices over the whole united states, there are muddy places. Thereare mountainous places. There are canyons. The way water flows beneath the ice sheet and lubricates it would be way different if there's a canyon and if there's mud.
