When Joseph Smith died in 1844, there were questions about who would succeed him. Brigham Young said that the city of Nauvoo felt like sheep without a shepherd. At different points in the early years of the church, Joseph seems to be thinking different things about succession. As the Quorms and organizations develop, so does his thinking on succession.
