Pediatric Hypertension: What Is It?
The 2017 pediatric hypertension guidelines are sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It's not normal to have elevated blood pressure in childhood. When you're hypertensive though, that's when we really think about target organ damage and long term risk for heart disease or heart failure. You don't want to put every kid on medication right? But you definitely want to address the kids who are more likely to develop some of that organ damage. And so it sounds like this diagnosis for 13 and above is a good one.
