CHAPTER

Child Poverty and the Importance of Developing Human Brains

Poverty affects the development of human brains in ways that are largely irreversible. A little brain is not a miniature adult brain. It's a brain under construction, and it needs to have those construction materials. The conditions of poverty prevent infants and young children from receiving the kind of input from the physical and social worlds that they require in order to develop optimally. And so if you're a business leader, if you're somebody who cares about industry and business potential or things like that, you should care because this is a colossal waste of human capital. This is as close to a fact as probably get.
