They cut out any scenes that didn't really feature laurel and hardy. They removed narration from the film, and they also put a new musical sound track under most of it. The 19 forties movies are so conventional. You look at a movie like sons of the desert, and it is so uncompromising. And there's no attempt to make them sympathetic.
