Is Generational Consciousness Already Operative in the 19th Century?

Ideas of generational consciousness in Europe come to the fore with long sociologists in the 1970s. There's a sense of these being projected back onto the 19th century, but I think there's a lot to be said for them. The revolutions of 1789 and 1848 are obvious turning points that generate cleavages - birthing new nations. First World War is linked to a generation of cleavage and a sort of generational consciousness from 1918 maybe into the 1920s.
