The Evolution of Aging and Damage Accumulation

The idea of metabolism and oxidation as a sort of driver of aging was well established when I came into the field. It was beyond any shadow of the doubt that the main cause of aging was actually oxidation, particularly from reactive oxygen species such as superoxide free radical produced as a byproduct of mitochondrial metabolism. So you had, for example, the idea of metabolism generating oxidative oxygen and damage accumulating. And you had the idea of disposable soma, which was a beautiful and elegant kind of connection between the evolutionary theory and the idea of damage accumulation.
