Amneotic Fluid Embolism
The current thought is that the mam gets exposed to some component in the amneotic fluid itself that she then relaxe reacts to. Think like anaphalaxis, ok. So it's a disseminated, diffuse, profound reaction to what she's been exposed to that leads to cardia, vascular collapse, respiratory arrest and sudden onset d i c all. This happens either during pregnancy or right around the time of delivery. Historically, it was believed that it was all due to a large amount of fetal debris.
