Common JS was started by Mozilla engineer Kevin Dangore in January of 2009 to address the lack of common accepted modality practices. ESM is what's called statically analyzed, meaning that you can rip through the entire require or import tree in a single pass and know exactly what dependencies are needed with node JS. Node.js was initially released May 27, 2009. And this was created January 2009.
In this episode of Syntax, Wes and Scott talk through what ESM is, and why you want to move your projects to ESM.
