As demand for beef booms after the Civil War, many men are drawn to the cattle industry. The new cowboys look to Mexico for guidance. Mexican cowboys are renowned in the industry for their exceptional horsemanship. A young German-born American businessman arrives in San Francisco to sell durable canvas tents and wagon covers. When that venture fails, he designs a new style of work trousers which prove hugely popular.
