The idea is that the infant is in a disorganized state and that disorganization has to be contained by the mother. The basic assumptions kind of give us this sense of vitality or purpose that we kind of cling to. When the group is not working effectively, we kind of fall into that disorganized state - it's an anxious, unpleasant state.
