When germ theory was introduced in the mid second half of the 19th century and malaria was shown to be caused by a parasitic organism, people began looking more towards chemical compounds to the brain to treat diseases. Napthalene had been prescribed before as a quote unquote internal aniseptic. And so this is again, trying to treat the worms. This is where the germ theory thing becomes relevant.
