Cohort effects are the result of changing norms and fashions in society over time that affect everyone. The pre-war generation will have a high level of attachment to religion. Your chances of owning a home is hugely related to when you were born not just your age or socioeconomic circumstances. If you had been born 10 or 20 years earlier you could have expected a very different outcome.
