The Importance of Social Status

We always like to think we're very sophisticated, kind of intelligent and we're just half a percent different from a champ. And one of the things that you need to know about humans is that social status is extraordinarily important to us. It's actually for very good reasons because if you were shunned by your society, you'd be kicked out of the village and you'd probably die very quickly. We are hard-coded to fit in and to signal to other people sort of how happy and whatever we are. Don't be trapped in it.
