James is referencing this moment in Genesis chapter 15. This is after a moment where Abraham rescues Lot. He's promised many things like he will have a descendant. Yet it's not happening yet. And so he's spending time with the Lord and the Lord pulls him out of this tent to count the stars. That's how many descendants you'll have.
