The baby Vivian was born in 1924. In that same year, Virginia passed a law that allowed the forced sterilization of people who were unfit or afflicted with hereditary forms of insanity. The institution where Carrie and Emma were living chose Carrie as the first one to be sterilized. She got a lawyer and took her case to the Supreme Court. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. wrote an opinion that's just very painful to read today.
