Reflux and Lifestyle Modifications

Tobacco and alcohol are other things that people often wonder, are those aggravating their reflux? We tell patients they shouldn't partake in either one of those. Studies have shown that if you eliminate either tobacco or alcohol from people's consumption, it really does not do anything to improve pH readings nor any GERD related symptoms. If a patient has a clear pattern to their reflux, meaning they say, every time I eat this kind of food or this specific thing, it always induces reflux, then that patient should try to minimize that particular thing rather than global elimination.
