The Relationship Between the Uses of Words
Sometimes we can use a word in two different ways, two different ways that are related. When this happens, we have an analogous use of words. We call God intelligent, but we also call him a rock. Is calling God a rock just another example of analogous predication? Aquinas would say no and for a very interesting reason. The notion of a rock automatically includes imperfection. Intelligence, by contrast, does not automatically include imperfection.
