The Origin of the C in Middle English
A c before a back vall, a or u didn't change. It mained a k sound just as it had always been in other languages. But what about the c before the front vowels e and i? There were three different possible pronunciations: che, ce or se. Middle english attempted to sort out this hodge bodge by adopting certain spelling rules. For many of the old words that had developed the c h, middle English scribes assigned the letter combination c h for that sound. This reflects the overall power influence of french at the time.
