The Free Market and the Universities
A lot of countries have said, okay, we've got to be like America. They measure our universities not by whether they contribute to societies, but how well they stack up against American universities. Germany and Japan are right to emphasize professors working with local industry trying to produce something that's useful for the people of the country. Smaller industries or companies, private enterprises, do not have the money to give to universities in the United States.
