There had been a few different schoolhouses in the village already when a notable new secondary school opened in 17 86 called erasmus hall academy. It was built just right across to day's flatbush avenue from the dutch reform church. And it holds the distinction of being the first secondary school chartered by new york state. The land was donated by the church, and much of the money for the school's construction was raised by prominent new yorkers including alexander hamilton and james de wayne and richard verrick.
