The Impacts of Deep Sea Mining on Marine Wildlife

Japan performed the world's fast deep sea mining test at Colbault Ridge Cross in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. As they mined the sea birds, plumes of sediment would spread hundreds of meters around the mining apparatus. The density of animals like fish and shrimp who were able to swim away in the areas that were directly affected decreased by 43%. There was an even larger drop of around 56% in animal density in the areas outside of the directly impacted areas.
