The book was about this cusp moment in African history and African consciousness just before the slave trade. I realized that I had unwittingly or unconsciously written about our own cusp moment right now. When I realized that it was actually a double story, a double language that was addressed in that double universe then I found my tone. It had to be a tragic, but transcendent tone. Very difficult.
