The Passion of Perpetualnfelicity
Athanasius describes a young woman who has a baby, and her father shaking her, saying, just offer the pinch of incense to the emperor on his birthday and you won't die. She's like, i can't. I'm a christian. And she dies in the arena. If you want to understand these people - that's what martyrdom is all about. We sometimes have a kind of utopian ideal for the world that we live in where everyone's religiously free. But our desirefor religious freedom may turn into something like an unwillingness to share the bravery of a martyr.
