Shuggie Bain: A Novel of Pride and Loneliness
The character of Shuggie Bain is so resilient to all this. He does it, but that's just my reading, but he's trying to walk like a real man. It isn't that the people being homophobic against Shuggie are always bad, it's just how society was. But part of the journey of gay pride and the gay liberation movement, whatever you want to call it, is not only to help gay people feel visible and loved, but also to educate everybody really.
