Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" is a story about the end of the world. He asks why live? Why put up with suffering, right? If you didn't have that career promotion and pleasure or whatever, why would you live? And he gives a reason. That's what's so awesome about it is that he doesn't say, well, we're screwed. There's no point to this. No, he says there is. Part of that reason is living for others, choosing to recognize the goodness of the son's life.
