Energy Efficiency, Demand Reduction, Is So Important?
The IEA says energy efficiency is the biggest lever to reduce emissions. It's not building out renewables or nuclear CCS, it's just using what we already have more efficiently. The IPCC does recognize that in order to stick to this 1.5 degrees, offsets are unavoidable. They can be nature-based solutions like trees or bogs. But they can also be things like enhancing natural processes like weathering to absorb more CO2 and then there are these other interventions like direct air capture.
