"It's such an intense morbid environment. Maybe some of them don't quite understand that just yet," he says. "You can be sort of cautiously optimistic, but until you're soaked through and there's wraps in these trenches and you can smell the dead bodies." The crew had to have 'difficult conversations' with people who wanted to take control of their own narrative,. But ultimately they have to be prepared to lose their lives,' adds director David Lean.
