The Wasteland
There are constant echoes in The Wasteland of themes and images from Ulysses. In Sanskrit the word for thunderbolt, Vadra, also signifies diamond and connotes transcendent illumination. Eliot regards London as a wasteland in the same way that Joyce regards Dublin as a wasteland. Both cities are filled with people doing what they are supposed to do instead of what their inner urgency moves them to do. Yet Stephen and Bloom will both find purgation in the circular swamps of the Dublin hell.
