The Overreaction of the Forest Service to Mount Baker

In 1975, Mount St. Helens began spewing ash and steam from its summit. Gelologists warned that even a small eruption could flood Baker Lake on the southeastern side of the volcano. The Forest Service closed the area around Baker Lake based on these warnings. Local outfitters, restaurants and hotels complained to the press that the Forest Service had overreacted when nothing serious ever happened other than the loss of a lot of income. A geological survey issued a new statement that there was now no clear evidence of a forthcoming eruption.
