Japan's Defense of the Southern Islands

Japan placing anti-air and ship and even ground attack missile batteries on these islands. Is this Tokyo trying to provide a deterrent against an attack on Taiwan or is Japan genuinely worried about an invasion of these southern islands? It's definitely tilted towards their outlying islands, but there is a realistic idea that defending everything means you're defending nothing. There is in development a marine amphibious brigade that would be something that could come to the defense.
