Contemporary belief was that acting in theatres, which were sometimes wild places of entertainment, was not a suitable activity for a woman. This was partly based on a religious objection to acting as something that was wrong or sinful. It was also because of the beliefs in elizabethan, england around how a woman should behave. She should be at home, looking after children, not too opinionated, and playing a subservient role to her husband. And shakespeare's company, his group ofat s, was all male. But as you will know, there are plenty of female characters in sh Shakespeare plays. So how did that work? These female roles were played by young boys
