I think less than and greater than for max and min is pretty good because you're reusing an existing distinction that the user has to have learned already. The pairing makes perfect sense but which one exactly is it the dot or the colon? I use a programming language where it's less than underscore. Less in mathematics. Some languages always distinguish up from down they look very different. But on my screen right now I'm seeing a button that says mute and if I hit that button I'm going to see unmute. So there is sort of a balance between those things.
