The Importance of Expertise in Universities

I'm a big believer in expertise, and I think you get that from coming up through the system. Research shows universities are more successful when they're led by former academics. The same pattern holds for hospitals run by doctors and NBA basketball teams coached by former All-Stars. And so there does seem to be some expertise in the core work that lies behind the mission of an organization.
