The Importance of Being Very Rich in College Admissions
New York Times study of elite college admissions data suggests being very rich is its own qualification. For applicants with the same SAT or ACT score children from families in the top 1% were 34% more likely to be admitted than the average applicant. Richard Quest: The working class isn't really represented in the elite universities except for a very, very tiny fraction. He says it's not because these children had more impressive grades on average or took harder classes. Quest: They're there because of some extraneous desire, which is the parents wanting to pass on their wealth, have their good job and marry well.
