The Real Prison
Zimbardo: They basically did everything that you would think would happen in a real prison on a slightly scaled down level. He was saying they could have left at any time if they just said the safe word and no one ever said the safeword. There is some evidence that these people were basically kept there against their will, especially after Douglas Korpie basically faked his emotional breakdown and then was thrown into a broom closet for it. That's how real the simulated prison became in people's minds. Just imagine what a real prison's like.
