King Oswi of northumbria ruled in favor of the roman side at a synod. The ruling had immediate ramifications for all monasteries around england. It meant that britain was becoming part of this wider latin early mediaeval world. There is also then an introduction and flourishing of anglo saxon verse. And one of these really distinct british habits, i would say, is the tremendous value placed upon literature and poetry.
