In 1817, the future governor of New York City had an idea for a state wide canal. He published his plans under the pseudonym hercules but no one knew that he was actually in prison. This july fourth was marked with the smell of gunpowder and the sound of dense rocks being blasted into pieces as they broke ground for the first time on the erie canal.
