Don't Reinvent the Wheel
Before the Industrial Revolution, making those fasteners was really hard. You had to cut each individual thread on a screw manually too. So nuts and bolts were way more challenging to create. And of course, screws, nuts, rivets,. they're around during this time period too, but just not in the quantities like the nail. The nail is still around and I think that's for me what makes it such a great piece of design is that it's endured.
