The Virtue of a Vow of Chaste Widowhood

St. Augustine strongly recommended that Christian widows take such a vow. The widow who wishes to truly be a widow must voluntarily separate and restrain herself from worldly satisfactions, for she who is self-indulgent is dead even while she lives. So too, widows whose love was pure in marriage send forth a sweeter perfume of virtue and chastity when their husband is extinguished by death.
