The Gift of Grace

Paul is making it clear that God does not say clean up your act, straighten up, fly right and then I'll save you. He did not save you by good deeds. He saved you so that you would be careful to engage in good deeds. Those good deeds do not contribute to your salvation, to your justification, to your acceptance with God. You don't earn a gift, God gives it to you.
