The 19th century whaling industry had a high average return, but that masked tremendous variability. The prospect of deeply negative returns was always there for investors in the business. Deaths at sea were not uncommon and entire ships were often lost at sea. Modern venture capital firms are structured very much like the whaling corporations of the 1830s.
