The Beginnings of Taboo Words

The C word is used in place names in early middle English and sometimes in medical textbooks. But by the 18th century, if it's printed at all, it's printed with an asterisk. So you can just see there the beginnings of taboo words. And at some point, wife went off on its own, as it were, to mean specifically a woman in matrimony.
