The Morning and the Evening by Joan Williams
In 1961, Williams' first novel was published, The Morning and the Evening. She asked Faulkner for a book jacket quote, and for some reason he was offended. He wrote back and gave her a grudging blurb: "This is a compassionate and hopeful first novel" And that ended her relationship with Faulkner. It was impossible to say his letter on their parting was as ardent as any he ever sent her.
