Study looked at finger prints in thousands of people and asked which parts of the genom are associated with different types of finger prints. Genes that skew the ity of whether one has an arch, a loop or a whirl on a particular finger are genes that are active in the core of the limb and the digit as they are growing and developing. And what we find is that these genes, by and large, switch off before the skin begins to produce its ridges from week 12 approximately of development.
