Open Source - What's the Ideal Approach?

How are you going to build something that's sustainable but still usable and accessible for for the end user and open source as well is is an important piece of that. We don't plan to make a paid up we we like what signals it for donations for example you you choose to donate or voluntary subscribe and you get some badges or premium application icons but not something for example the telegram model of premium i find weird right so like artificially limiting up features in order to charge you money  i'm fully applaud when some extra functionalities provider that cannot be provided without additional cost such as cloud hosting.

that's very interesting compromise it's i mean that's one of the hardest things to to answer in the open source space and in the privacy space is how are you going to build something that's sustainable but still usable and accessible for for the end user and open source as well is is an important piece of that so that's something that i think everyone's talking about wrestling with the the ideal approach there and even the the elastic situation that you mentioned was one that was interesting and divisive and understandable when they're their shift from a more traditional open source license into the the licensing you mentioned because essentially their their business was being uh just destroyed because companies were just taking their code running it and offering it as a service that was a paid service to their customers which was causing them to to be able to to not be able to sustain their business that's it's an interesting piece and it's always one that's that's tricky in this space um so definitely i'll definitely be curious to see the approach that you'll end up taking but thank you for laying out kind of your your vision for that at this point the vc funding and the donations that have been been key to the success up until this point

yes so i think we don't plan to make a paid up we we like what signals it for donations for example you you choose to donate or voluntary subscribe and you get some badges or premium application icons but not something for example the telegram model of premium i find weird right so like artificially limiting up features in order to charge you money so i kind of i'm fully applaud when some extra functionalities provider that cannot be provided without additional cost for example cloud hosting right so we will be as a file transfer and it may evolve into cloud hosting and a long-term file hosting is costly so it is likely to be premium feature if if it happens right but just limiting the number of profiles like people ask how many profiles you can can you create and suppose however you want we're not gonna make number of profiles a premium feature because it's just i find it like extortion right so i'm gonna turn off the functionality in order that you pay me money i'm not gonna create so instead of creating really i'm gonna take value from you and that will much of it i just find it unfair to the users and unnecessary because you can always find the ways to create value and get paid for it plus user is willing to pay my even without badges or icons today right people donate their open collective and we're hugely grateful for that that helps a lot because it shows that network can be sustainable however small donation doesn't matter the fact that people set up recurring donation for using the up without us asking without us pushing any conditions to that or given any instant return i think if this didn't happen then simply start simply would not exist by now we would not be able to raise funds we would not be able to make it as far as we did already so this is a fantastic and huge help that users community are willing not just to use but also donate money for using the up
